2008 July > Decoration Day The Newmarket Veterans Association held their 60th Annual Decoration Day last month, with a great turnout of people coming to honour those from Newmarket who fell in combat. The tradition to "decorate" the graves of veterans with flowers, wreaths and crosses dates back to 1868 when Americans honoured those who fell in the American Civil War. This year's event saw many local veterans out to pay respect to their fallen comrades along with special guests, The Burma Star Association, a group of men and women who fought and served in the Burma Campaign. The Newmarket Veterans Association had British Royal Navy Veteran Ed Beniston as the guest speaker this year, and also featured the colour parties of the NVA, Royal Canadian Legion & Burma Star Association along with the Newmarket Citizen's Band and Upper Canada Chordsmen.
