Fraud Awareness Seminar
Wednesday March 10th, 11pm-12am
Location:
Address:1 Municipal Drive
PUBLIC INVITED TO ATTEND FRAUD AWARENESS SEMINAR
York Regional Police is proud to host, as part of Fraud Awareness Month, an information session organized by our Major Fraud Unit focused on consumer purchases (renovation and repairs), identity theft and how to protect your credit rating, counterfeit detection and identity theft-related to debit and credit cards.
In keeping with our Business Plan goals of engaging citizens in crime protection, York Regional Police, in partnership with Interac, Trans Union, Bank of Canada and the Ministry of Small Business and Consumer Services, want to educate the public and business owners on how to reduce fraud through community awareness and crime prevention tips.
The public, along with store owners, managers, or anyone who handles cash transactions on a regular basis are encouraged to attend the seminar to increase their fraud awareness.
This free seminar open to the public will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Town of Aurora Municipal Offices, in Council Chambers, located at 1 Municipal Drive in the Town of Aurora.
Participants are asked to register early as seats are limited. Register by calling 1-866-876-5423 ext. 6611 or by email at 5438@yrp.ca.
In light of a recent increase in counterfeiting activities across the Greater Toronto Area, York Regional Police would like to remind the public of the following, including the TILL method of checking counterfeit bills.
• Touch the bill – bank note paper has a unique feel with raised ink on the front of the bill
• Tilt the bill - watch for the changing colours of the numbers and the two-toned maple leaves in the metallic stripe
• Look through the bill – hold the bill up to the light and look for the ghost image and puzzle number near the middle
• Look at the bill – you need to look carefully to make sure it appears and works as it should when you tilt or look through the note
• Always check the money you receive from any business to ensure you have not been accidentally given counterfeit money
• Residents are encouraged to regularly check their credit bureau for unauthorized requests and be wary of suspicious phone calls or emails
For more information or to register, please contact Kathleen Stewart at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 6611 or by email at 5438@yrp.ca.
